Champions League

2024
Still from Turkish Airlines // Champions League

Football does not look like a broadcast package. It looks like a scrapbook someone kept all season.

Turkish Airlines came to the Champions League final in Istanbul as a sponsor, and wanted a film that sounded like the stands rather than the studio. The brief was passion. The risk was making something glossy and forgettable.

So we built the film out of material instead of rendering it. Photographs, newsprint, flags, kit fabric, stadium aerials, city landmarks, handwriting. Everything torn rather than cut, so the edges stay rough and you can see the seams.

Each piece was separated and animated on its own. Nothing moves as a flat card. A crowd shifts at a different rate to the flag in front of it, and the paper edges catch as they pass. That is where the energy comes from, not from the cuts.

We put a real pizza into the Napoli frame. It is the kind of detail nobody asks for and everybody remembers.

Frames

The look was signed off on stills before anything was animated.

Four techniques, one language

Half the industry calls this collage, the other half calls it mixed media. Either way it is four techniques doing different jobs. Collage carries the film; the rest are in there wherever a shot needed weight, speed or a hand on it.

Collage

The base layer, and the reason the film gets filed under mixed media too. Torn photography, print texture and fabric, assembled by hand and separated into parts before anything moved.

Cel

The drawn marks on top. Scribbles, arcs and impact lines, frame by frame, so the film has something visibly human in it.

3D

Stadiums, the ball and the aircraft. Modelled so a camera could move around them, then treated to sit inside the paper world rather than on top of it.

Stop motion

The timing. Holds and steps instead of smooth curves, which is what keeps the collage feeling like objects rather than layers.
