Synopsis

A long overnight flight. A young man absorbed in his phone, an older woman beside him, and one shared armrest. An unnoticed intrusion becomes a silent contest of wills, fought through sideways glances, polite smiles and movements measured in millimetres.

Approach

ARMREST treats a minor inconvenience with the seriousness of a standoff. There is no dialogue: a tightening jaw, a shifting elbow or a smile held a little too long has to carry the scene. The humour comes from how seriously both passengers take the dispute while trying to appear perfectly civil.

The visual language builds around a fixed frontal view of the two passengers, returning to the same composition as the tension rises. Tight crops of eyes and brows alternate with overhead views of the armrest and close details of fabric pressing against fabric. Repeated angles make small changes visible; increasingly quick cuts turn those changes into a duel. The arrival of the drinks trolley brings a temporary truce, with the rivalry continuing beneath a layer of politeness.

Sound gives weight to these tiny actions. Fabric friction, the creak of the armrest and the rattle of the service trolley sit against the steady cabin hum. As the conflict escalates, the rhythm becomes more insistent, leaving room for a quieter change between the characters.

Production

ARMREST continues the reference-based workflow we have been developing at WRAI. Before generating the shots, we established the characters, wardrobe, cabin, seating arrangement and props. These approved assets provided a consistent foundation for each camera angle.

The close physical interaction made continuity especially important. The position of each elbow, ownership of the armrest, direction of a glance and placement of a cup all affect how the next cut reads. We approached generation as a series of specific performance beats, then shaped the exchanges through editing and sound.

Following Lost & Found and 30 Min Delivery, this film explores another part of our storytelling practice: physical comedy at a small scale. A single shared armrest becomes enough space to build tension, reveal character and create an unexpected moment of connection.
